[b-], Visayan Islands [vɪ'sajən 'aɪləndz], der zwischen Luzon und Mindanao, den Hauptinseln der Philippinen, gelegene Archipel; umfasst mit 75 595 km2 ein Viertel der Staatsfläche. Größte der mehreren Tausend Inseln sind (von Westen nach Osten): Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte und Samar. Infolge weitgehend anthropogen bedingter Zerstörung des ökologischen Gleichgewichtes, verbunden mit Mangel an nichtlandwirtschaftlichen Ressourcen sowie starker Bevölkerungszunahme, sind die Visayas Hauptabwanderungsregion des Landes, bis in die 1960er-Jahre vornehmlich nach Mindanao, seitdem bevorzugt direkt ins Ballungsgebiet von Manila. - Die Visayas sind der erste von den Spaniern in Besitz genommene Landesteil (erst 1571 wurde die Hauptstadt von Cebu nach Manila verlegt). Handels-, Wirtschafts-, Verkehrs- und kulturelles Zentrum ist bis heute Cebu.
